Silicone Cake Molds

For anyone who has ever ice dyed, you know that sometimes one of the toughest things about ice dyeing is keeping the ice on top of the shirt.

I’ve tried a variety of products to make ice barriers: plastic cutting boards that I cut into strips, cardboard, aluminum foil and finally silicone cake molds.

Silicone cake molds are by far my favorite product to use. I purchase mine from Amazon: https://amzn.to/2EnsaU2 Initially I started out by purchasing just a couple sets, but I’ve since purchased quite a few more since I use them all the time.

The cake molds are so simple to wrap around shirts - especially unusually shaped shirts like a geodes. I used to dread ice dyeing a geode tie dye before finding the cake molds because it was almost more time consuming to try to make an ice barrier than it was to tie the shirt.

To keep the cake molds right up next to the shirt, I use some wooden clothespins and attach them to the metal rack that my shirt is on. Since they are moldable, they can be pressed really close to the shirt. Here is a link to one of my YouTube videos showing how I used the cake molds around a geode shirt: https://youtu.be/aAMExqqGQDg

After the shirt is complete, I wash the cake molds in soapy water and put them aside to dry. If there is any excess dye residue that doesn’t easily come off the molds with soap and water - usually a magic eraser will take it right off.

The only disadvantage I found is that they aren’t extremely tall. They work really well on regular t-shirts, but they aren’t quite tall enough to use on most hoodies and sweatshirts.

So, if you are looking for an easy, reusable and convenient solution for an ice barrier - you might want to look into silicone cake molds.
